Everything you need to know about our transitional housing program.
Program Overview & Eligibility
1. Who is eligible to live at The Pivot Pad?
The Pivot Pad serves young women ages 18-22 who are aging out or have aged out of the foster care system. We welcome residents who are committed to building their independence and are willing to actively participate in our life skills programming. You don't need to have everything figured out - we're here to support you on your journey. Whether you're working, in school, or both, if you're ready to invest in your future and be part of a supportive community, you may be a good fit for The Pivot Pad.
2. How long can I stay at The Pivot Pad?
Our program is designed as transitional housing, typically for 24 months average. This timeframe gives you enough time to build essential skills, save money, complete education or training programs, and establish a solid foundation for independent living. We understand that everyone's journey is different, so we work individually with each resident to determine the best timeline for their success. Our goal is to help you transition to permanent, independent housing when you're ready - not before.
3. Do I need a job to apply?
Not necessarily. We understand that you might be in school, looking for work, or in transition. What we do require is a plan and commitment to working toward financial independence. This could mean you're actively job searching, enrolled in school or a training program, or already employed. During the application process, we'll work with you to create a realistic plan for your income and goals. We also connect residents with job resources, resume help, and career development support to help you secure employment.
Housing, Costs & Policies
4. How much does it cost to live at The Pivot Pad?
We believe in affordable housing that doesn't compromise your ability to save and build your future. Our rent is significantly below market rate in Houston, designed to be manageable on an entry-level income or while you're in school. The exact amount depends on the specific unit and your individual circumstances. We work with each resident to ensure housing costs don't prevent you from achieving your goals.
5. What's included in my rent?
Your rent covers your private or shared bedroom in a safe, well-maintained home, as well as access to common areas including kitchen, living room, and laundry facilities. Utilities (water, electricity, internet) are included. You'll also have full access to all our life skills programs, workshops, and community activities at no additional cost. What's not included: personal food (though we teach budgeting and meal planning), personal phone service, transportation, and personal items. We provide the foundation - you bring your commitment to growth.
6. Can I have visitors or overnight guests?
Yes, you can have visitors during designated hours, and we encourage you to maintain healthy relationships with friends and family. However, for the safety and comfort of all residents, overnight guests are not allowed under any circumstances. Specific visitor policies will be explained during your orientation.
7. Can I bring my pet?
The Pivot Pad unfortunately does not allow pets on the premises.
8. What are the house rules?
Our house rules are designed to create a safe, respectful community where everyone can thrive. Key rules include:
Maintaining your living space and shared areas in clean condition.
Respecting quiet hours (typically 10 PM - 7 AM).
No illegal drugs or underage alcohol consumption.
Active participation in at least two programs monthly.
Treating all residents and staff with respect, and following visitor policies.
Communicating openly with staff about challenges or concerns.
We also require residents to work, attend school, or be actively engaged in approved activities. Detailed house rules are provided before move-in.
Program Support & Growth
9. What programs and support do you offer?
We offer comprehensive programming across six core areas:
Community Connection: social activities, networking, friendship building.
Digital Literacy: computer skills, online safety, professional communication.
You'll have access to one-on-one support, group workshops, and connections to community resources.
10. Do you provide meals or food?
We provide a fully equipped kitchen where you can prepare your own meals, and we teach cooking skills and meal planning as part of our Life Skills program. Residents are responsible for purchasing their own groceries, but we help you learn to shop on a budget and cook nutritious, affordable meals. We can also connect you with resources like food banks or SNAP benefits if you need additional food assistance.
11. What if I have mental health challenges or need counseling?
Your mental health matters to us. While we're not a clinical treatment facility, we provide resources, referrals, and support for mental health needs. Our Mental Wellness program includes stress management techniques, self-care strategies, and connections to affordable or free counseling services in Houston. We work with local mental health providers and can help you navigate insurance and community resources.
12. Do you help with finding a job or going to school?
Absolutely! Career and education support is a core part of what we do. Our Career Development program includes resume writing assistance, interview preparation, job search strategies, connections to Houston employers, help with FAFSA and financial aid applications, and guidance on choosing career paths. We partner with local resources to maximize your success.
13. What happens when I'm ready to leave? Do you help with that transition?
Yes! We support you through the transition. In your final months, we work with you on an exit plan that includes securing permanent housing, building your savings, ensuring stable employment, creating a post-Pivot Pad budget, and connecting you with ongoing community resources. Many graduates stay connected through our alumni network and return to mentor new residents.
Application & Integrity
14. What happens if I violate house rules or can't pay rent?
We believe in second chances and working through challenges. If you're struggling with rent, communicate with us immediately – we can often work out a payment plan. For rule violations, we typically use a progressive approach: verbal warning, written warning, and meeting to create an improvement plan. Our goal is always to help you succeed. However, serious violations (violence, illegal activity) may result in immediate termination of residency.
15. How do I apply? What's the application process?
The process has several steps:
Complete our online application form or request a paper application.
Submit required documents (ID, proof of foster care history, income information, references).
Attend an in-person or virtual interview.
Undergo a background check.
If approved, sign your residency agreement and complete orientation.
The entire process typically takes 2-4 weeks. We aim to make it as straightforward as possible.
